Geeky Friday Four: 3-30-18

Welcome to my weekly dump of the geeky stuff in my life!  For last week’s list, click here.

What I’m Watching: Jessica Jones & White Collarjessica-jones

Good news, everyone: There was one more season of White Collar than I thought!  YAY!   The Smuggler and I also started watching Season 2 of Jessica Jones, so it really just depends on our mood which one we pick.  Need something happy and more lighthearted?  White Collar.  Need fantastic storytelling and are ready for some heavy sh**? Jessica Jones.

Both shows currently available for streaming on Netflix.

What I’m Reading: Grain Brain by Dr. David Perlmutter

grain brain

Non-fiction.  Usually, I hate non-fiction.  But this one is SUPER easy to read, has good info, and I’m hoping can help me figure out why my body hasn’t liked me at all for the last year.  I’m just a few chapters in and definitely recommend.  (The above link isn’t an affiliate or anything, just including it in case you’d like to check it out on amazon!)

What I’m Playing: Dragon Age: Inquisition.

I played multiplayer for the first time last night, and that was new and fun!  I chose to be a mage, which was totally against my instinct, and ended up being rather enlightening.  Mages tend to drive me frickin’ bananas whenever I’m playing campaign, (because COULD YOU STAND ANY FURTHER AWAY?  NO.  YOU COULDN’T.) but after figuring out the fighting style I have a new appreciation for them.  It also helped me learn how to better utilize them during big campaign battles.
Also: I do not like the Fade.

What I’m Listening To: The Critical Role Podcast.

A bunch of nerdy voice actors playing D&D.  The show is actually streamed live once a week with a video cast, but I’m a busy mama who needs the convenience of an audio podcast.  It’s fast paced, good storytelling, fun to hear the actors interact as both players and characters, and the DM is amazing.  (Side-note: I listen with headphones in or when the kids aren’t around because of language and violence.) Perfect for cleaning the kitchen, doing chores, long car rides (again, without children listening), and it makes me laugh so hard!  Also, since I have no idea how a young nursing mother is even supposed to find a group don’t yet play D&D , this is how I’m learning to understand the game and getting my fix.

That’s my four for this week!  What what geeky things are you enjoying today?

New Fantasyland Quiz!

The Disney Parks Blog had a cool new quiz out today to test and see how well we Disnerds know New Fantasyland!

It’s very trivia-based, so I got a whopping zero.  Smuggler got a perfect 100%, of course.

Check it out below, and let me know what you got!

Prepping for Not-So-Scary 2018

My family will be going to Disney World in October, and we will definitely be catching a Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween party while we are there!

Working out costume ideas for a family of four isn’t super easy, especially since we have two boys and not a mix of boys and girls.  Plus we are going with some of my husband’s family, so we will have a large group!

So far the thought is we will likely do….

meet the robinsons

Meet the Robinsons!

Two main boy characters for our boys, and a TON of main characters for us grown-ups to choose from.  Plus, the Smuggler and I like to pick costumes that are easily recognizable, but not common (aka not Dalmations or the Incredibles, which a ton of families at Disney do and are adorable…  buuut, we like to stand out).  Also, imagine the photo ops in Tomorrowland!   Ahhh!  This could change, but so far everyone seems agreeable to the film choice.

Normally I wouldn’t post about this until later, but I think I may actually try to make part of my costume this time, so I’ll be posting more as I collect costume pieces and work on making whatever I can’t buy.  I’m not a great sewer, but I’ve been inspired lately by some newer cosplayers that I follow on Instagram, so maybe I’ll give something simple a try, like a skirt or something.  We will see!

I love planning Halloween early! Do you have any great costume ideas for this year?

Writing

Writer’s Block

I have a story stuck in my head.  It’s been there for about ten or so years now, shifting, changing, and growing, it’s characters becoming fuller in my mind throughout the years.

For the past few weeks I’ve really been fleshing out the ideas in my head, figuring out the characters, how they would work together, simplifying the world the story lives in because I was making it way more complicated than it needed to be.  And I’ve been sitting here for a half hour trying to figure out what word should begin this story.

I can usually force myself to write a basic blog post.  Blogs are about my life, things that I honestly think or that really happened.

But a story completely from my mind?  That’s different.  I love my characters.  Their plot makes me worried about how it will all turn out in the end (because honestly, I’m not 100% sure if the good guys win and everyone makes it…) and I want to write it out because I want to see where it can go.  I want to know what happens, and that’s hard to do when it’s kept all up inside my head.

Plus, I’m terrified no one will like it.  Worse, I’m scared someone will hate it.  Granted, it’s not like I have to share what I write… but isn’t that how stories come to life?

I’m toying with the idea of starting another side blog just for this story.  Where I would publish one chapter regularly (maybe every two weeks?) just to keep myself on a schedule of writing.  Because I want this story to see actual words on a page (or screen, as it were). To gain a life outside of my head.

All this to say…  Shall I give it a go?  Would anyone read it? Gimme some input, ye peoples of the interwebs.

Disney Housewife gets a makeover!

Pic: My boy and his dog.

Quick post today, y’all!

You may have noticed that not only has the title and layout of the blog has changed, but also the web address!

Why The Merry Mousewife?

“Mouse” is for two things: it’s in honor of Mickey Mouse (or as my son likes to say, “Mi-Mouse!), still sounds like “housewife” (since that’s my primary job that I love), and also reminds me of the Churchmice from Robin Hood.  Much of my growing up years were spent at church as both parishioner and as a musician, including many Holy Weeks where I would be at church every day, often more than once! My faith is still important in my life today, and a huge part of who I am, and I wanted to find a way to honor that as well.

So there you have it: Mickey, being a housewife, and my faith all came together to form this revamped blog.  I think the change will help me open up a new world of writing for myself, and I hope you enjoy!
